A hand seems to reach down from the heavens and places in our hearts the words of comfort and assurance … “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”
In these words of comfort, we are given glimpses of how God uses His heavenly hosts – the angels – to guide, comfort, and protect.
These promises become even more real when believers step out of our comfort zone and share God’s Word with others.
“A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling. Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.” (Daniel 10:10-12)
“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11)
Evangelism may appear like an immovable mountain – and that is the picture the devil wants a believer to see. The only way to remove them is by faith. By trusting in God’s promises, we place the work of moving mountains into God’s hands. The majesty of a mountain peak gives us a glimpse of God’s majesty and power. It’s faith that takes the emphasis off of our self-absorbing pride and squarely on God where it belongs.
The same power of God that moves mountains also equips the believer steps out in faith and into a spiritual battle. When a Christian shares God’s Word with an unbeliever, they are placing themselves on the front lines of a fierce, spiritual battle. God calls on us to not be afraid, but to engage to engage the enemy. He provides us with the arsenal of His grace which includes the shield of faith, the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. (Ephesians 6) All of these come from God’s arsenal and are readily distributed according to His wisdom and grace.
But I think there is something more profound that God provides for believers who share God’s Word with others.
I enjoy watching an action movie when the lead character is trapped under heavy fire. He will ask his partners to “cover” him while he moves to a better strategic position. While running out into the open, his partners will open fire and empty their weapons to distract the enemy or keep them from firing back. Without providing cover, our hero becomes an easy target.
There are times in the Bible where God opens up another dimension for his servants to see a legion of angels who are providing cover for them. They are engaging the enemy in a spiritual battle. They are resisting the attempts by the demonic forces so the believer can be placed in strategic position to share God’s Word. They are given that divine opportunity to share God’s Word and the Lord is providing “cover” for them.
We can take to heart the words from God, “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.” That not only does God provide us with the armor of protection, but also cover from His heavenly hosts to carry out His commission to share the gospel.
